Movie Description
Soori and Suhas have teamed up for the latest Tamil drama Mandaadi, which has arrived in theatres today. Directed by Pugazhendhi Mathimaran, the film revolves around traditional boat racing, village rivalry and the bitter relationship between two former friends.
Story
The story is set in Kalingapatnam. Muthukaali, played by Soori, and Sattapuli, played by Suhas, were once close friends and skilled boat sailors. A painful incident separates them and turns their friendship into a long-standing rivalry. The film focuses on what caused their split, how Sattapuli established his dominance in the village and what brings the two men face-to-face again through a crucial boat race.
Plus Points
One of the major positives of Mandaadi is its setting. The lives of coastal communities and their traditional lifestyle are presented with a grounded feel. The boat-racing backdrop also gives the movie something different from regular rural dramas.
Soori delivers a restrained performance as Muthukaali. His character does not depend heavily on lengthy dialogues, and the actor effectively conveys his emotions through his expressions and screen presence. Suhas is equally impressive as Sattapuli. His negative-shaded character gives him plenty of scope to show a different side, and his dialogue delivery and intensity stand out.
Minus Points
The confrontations between Soori and Suhas provide some of the film’s strongest moments. The pre-interval portion creates good interest, while the action sequences and background score add energy to the proceedings. Mahima Nambiar, Sathyaraj and Ravindra Vijay make their presence felt in supporting roles.
However, the film loses some momentum in the second half. The story takes a more predictable route, and the emotional conflict between the two central characters could have been explored in greater depth. The boat-racing portions are well presented, but a few unexpected twists could have made them more exciting.
Technical Aspects
On the technical side, GV Prakash Kumar’s background score works well, particularly during the action portions. SR Kathir’s cinematography captures the coastal locations and sea sequences effectively. The editing is decent, although a few portions could have been tighter.
Verdict
Overall, Mandaadi has an interesting premise and benefits greatly from the performances of Soori and Suhas. The coastal setting, boat-racing sequences and strong background score work in its favour, while the predictable second half keeps it from becoming a more impactful drama.
