Scene Movie Review

3/5

Movie Description

Suriya is back on the big screen with Scene, a crime comedy thriller directed by Malayalam filmmaker Jithu Madhavan. The film has created good expectations with its interesting cast, including Nazriya Nazim and Naslen. Adding to the curiosity, Nazriya makes her return to Kollywood after 12 years, while Naslen appears in a negative role for the first time. Let’s see how the film turns out.

Story

Suriya plays DSP Prem Raj, a police officer who wishes to resign from his job. However, his seniors are not ready to accept his decision because of his impressive record in solving serious criminal cases. The department assigns him another murder investigation that appears to be connected to the pattern of the notorious Perfume Killer, played by Tovino Thomas.

During the investigation, Prem Raj comes across an unexpected truth about himself. With the support of his assistant Maya (Nazriya), he takes up the challenging case. The mystery surrounding the killer and the twists in Prem Raj’s personal life drive the remaining story.

Performances

Suriya delivers a refreshing performance as DSP Prem Raj. Unlike his usual intense police characters, this role gives him plenty of opportunities to explore humour and lighter emotions. His natural screen presence makes several scenes enjoyable.

Nazriya Nazim is a good addition to the film. Her chemistry with Suriya works well, and their conversations provide some entertaining moments. The mortuary proposal sequence stands out as one of the film’s highlights.

Naslen makes a decent impression as the antagonist. His relaxed body language and unusual approach to the negative character make his role interesting. Lal provides some laughs in the initial portions, while Tovino Thomas has a limited but noticeable presence.

Technical Aspects

Jithu Madhavan chooses an unusual approach by mixing a murder investigation with comedy and quirky characters. This treatment works in several places, although the screenplay loses some momentum during the first half.

Vineeth Augustian’s cinematography is neat, and Sushin Shyam’s background score adds energy to important sequences. Ajmal Sabu’s editing could have been sharper, particularly in the opening portions. The production values are satisfactory.

Plus Points

  • Suriya’s refreshing performance
  • Suriya and Nazriya’s chemistry
  • Naslen’s antagonist character
  • Situational comedy
  • Background score

Minus Points

  • Slow-paced first half
  • Familiar investigation storyline
  • Weak villain backstory
  • Limited hero-villain confrontations

Verdict

Scene is an attempt to present a crime thriller in a fun and entertaining manner. Suriya’s different cop character, Nazriya’s presence and Naslen’s performance make the film watchable. However, a predictable investigation and a few slow-moving portions affect the overall experience.

The second half offers some engaging moments, making it a decent one-time watch for audiences who enjoy crime comedies.
