Movie Description
Sumanth has chosen an interesting subject for his latest outing, Mahendragiri Varahi. Directed by Santhossh Jagarlapudi, the film blends mystery, mythology and supernatural elements into a story built around an unusual family curse.
Story
The story follows the Mahendragiri family, which has been living under a frightening belief for generations. According to the curse, the men in the family die after reaching the age of 33. The family desperately looks for a solution, while a series of mysterious events slowly reveal the larger story behind the curse.
Sumanth plays Siddharth, a YouTuber who makes videos exposing frauds and scams. His life takes an unexpected turn when his investigation leads him towards the Mahendragiri family and its mysterious past. From here, the film shifts into a more serious mystery-driven narrative.
Plus Points
The first half does a decent job of establishing the characters and the central mystery. The premise is interesting enough to keep the audience curious about the reason behind the curse. The interval episode gives the film another boost and sets up the second half.
Sumanth delivers a sincere performance and carries the film comfortably. His character’s investigative nature suits him, and he handles the emotional as well as serious portions well. Siddu Jonnalagadda’s special appearance is one of the highlights, even though his role is limited.
The supporting cast also adds value. Vennela Kishore and Brahmanandam provide some lighter moments, while the remaining actors perform adequately in their respective roles.
Minus Points
The director gets the twists and emotional backstory mostly right, but the film has a few logical gaps. The divine intervention arrives only towards the end, making viewers wonder why it did not happen earlier despite the chaos. The lack of a proper explanation makes this part feel convenient.
Technically, Mahendragiri Varahi could have been stronger. The VFX lacks polish, while some AI-generated visuals feel distracting. Revealing Aishwarya Rajesh’s character in the promotions also reduces the surprise factor in the theatre.
The middle portions are another weak point, with a few scenes that could have been trimmed for better pace. The basic premise may remind viewers of Murari, although the film follows a different path in developing its story.
Technical Aspects
Anup Rubens’ background score is decent and supports the proceedings well, while Pratap R Krishna’s cinematography is neat. However, the editing could have been sharper and more precise.
Director Santhossh Jagarlapudi deserves credit for staying focused on the main plot without adding unnecessary romantic tracks or distractions. He handles a few key portions effectively, but the film would have benefited from better attention to technical quality and logical consistency.
Verdict
Overall, Mahendragiri Varahi has a promising premise and a few genuinely engaging moments. Sumanth’s performance, the interval block and the climax work in its favour, but the slow middle portion and technical shortcomings hold the film back.A decent mystery thriller that works in parts.
